The most expensive face care? The One That Doesn’t Work

A smarter, simpler approach to skincare in your 30s and 40s
You are standing in front of your bathroom shelf after another long day. There are several half-used serums, two moisturisers, an exfoliant recommended on Instagram and a product you bought because everybody on TikTok seemed to love it.
Yet your skin still feels dry in some areas, congested in others and more tired than you would like.
If this sounds familiar, you may not need another product. You may simply need a clearer plan.
We spoke with Ula Kuber, physiotherapist, experienced facialist and founder of Smartlook Studio in Root, near Lucerne and Zug. After 15 years of working with different skin types in Poland, Dubai and Switzerland, her approach is clear: effective skincare should support your skin without becoming another complicated task in your life.
Ula, where did your “less but better” approach begin?
Taking care of myself has always felt natural to me. Not only in relation to my skin, but also movement, nutrition, sleep and the general quality of everyday life.
When it comes to skincare, however, I have never enjoyed complicated rituals. If I see a set containing ten different products, I immediately lose interest. Simplicity has always been one of the first things that determines whether a product stays in my bathroom or not.
My education as a physiotherapist gave me a strong foundation in anatomy, biology, physiology and biochemistry. I also analyse ingredients carefully. After 15 years of testing products, techniques and technologies on many different skin types, I know that more does not automatically mean more effective.
Especially in your 30s and 40s, when work, family, responsibilities, stress and changing skin needs are all competing for your attention, skincare must fit into your real life.
Why do so many women feel overwhelmed by skincare today?
Walk into almost any beauty store and you are faced with shelves full of products. Then you open Instagram or TikTok and see another cream, serum or active ingredient that supposedly changed somebody’s skin overnight.
Even with my experience, good marketing can still catch my attention. That is exactly what it is designed to do.
The problem is not that evйery popular product is bad. The problem is that a beautiful, effective product can still be completely wrong for your skin.
No cream, regardless of its price or popularity, can compensate for a compromised skin barrier, unsuitable cleansing, chronic stress, insufficient sleep or a routine that your skin simply does not need.
Does every woman with a long skincare routine need to simplify it?
Absolutely not. Many of my clients are very knowledgeable. They understand their products, enjoy their routine and are happy with their skin. I respect that and see no reason to change something that is working.
Other women arrive feeling frustrated. They have spent significant amounts of money, but they still do not know which products are helping and which may be contributing to sensitivity, dryness or congestion.
In these situations, we simplify. We look at the ingredients, the condition of the skin, the client’s budget and what she will realistically use consistently. I prefer introducing one product at a time and, whenever possible, allowing the client to test a sample before purchasing a complete range.
The goal is not to own more skincare. The goal is to understand what your skin needs.
How do you decide what a client’s skin actually needs?
Every appointment begins with a conversation.
I ask about current products, but also about lifestyle, sleep, stress, work and family. Some questions may initially appear unrelated to a facial, but they often reveal important information — sometimes even surprising the client herself.
I am not trying to redesign anyone’s life. I look for small, realistic changes that can actually be maintained.
A professional skin assessment, magnifying lamp, experience and an honest conversation often tell me much more than the treatment trend currently dominating social media.
Sometimes the best advice I can give is: “You do not need another active ingredient right now. Let us calm your skin and rebuild the basics first.”
Can one professional facial solve everything?
I describe my treatments as a booster and a new beginning.
A professional facial can deeply cleanse, prepare and stimulate the skin. It can also help us understand what the skin needs next. But lasting results are a partnership.
I often tell clients that we are working 50/50. I take responsibility for the professional treatment and guidance in the studio. The client continues that work at home with a routine that complements the treatment.
It should not be complicated. It simply needs to be appropriate and consistent.
What does your own simple skincare routine look like?
In the evening, I begin with an oil cleanser and use it for a short facial and lymphatic massage. If I have time, I may add a gua sha stone. The oil helps remove makeup, SPF, sebum and oil-soluble residue.
I follow with a gentle cleanser, apply toner with my hands, then use a targeted serum and a small amount of moisturiser.
In the morning, I use a very gentle cleanser, followed by a serum selected for what my skin needs at that moment — often vitamin C. I also enjoy using a caffeine eye serum.
I may use different moisturising textures on my T-zone and on areas that need more support for the skin barrier. I finish with daily sun protection, often using one product that combines moisturising care with SPF.
The exact products can change. The structure remains simple.
How did this philosophy become the Skin Longevity Facial?
For many years, I performed treatments based on individual technologies. With experience, I realised that one fixed machine or protocol could not respond to every skin condition or every stage of a woman’s life.
This is why I created the Skin Longevity Facial.
It is not one identical treatment repeated at every appointment. It is a method built from my experience and selected individually for the person in front of me.
Depending on the skin, I may combine deep but gentle cleansing, enzymatic exfoliation, hydrogen cleansing, professional ingredients, manual facial massage, Kobido techniques, lymphatic drainage, scalp, neck and décolleté massage or carefully selected skin stimulation.
I do not believe in fighting age. Ageing is a natural biological process. My objective is to support skin quality over time — its balance, hydration, texture, freshness and ability to function well.
Every visit can therefore be different, because your skin is not the same every day or every season.
What would you say to a woman standing in front of a shelf full of products, unsure what to choose?
I once saw a question: “What is the most expensive facial treatment?”
The answer was: “The one that does not work.”
The same applies to skincare products.
When you repeatedly buy products that do not suit your skin, you lose money, time and confidence. Your bathroom drawers fill up, products expire and you remain unsure about what to use.
Sometimes one professional treatment and an honest conversation with someone who works with skin every day can become the reset you need.
Before buying another product, pause. Look at what you already own. Ask yourself whether you understand why you use each product and what it is meant to achieve.
Personalised skincare is not about buying more. It is about making fewer, better decisions for your own skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many skincare products do I need in my 30s or 40s?
There is no universal number. A simple routine usually includes gentle cleansing, a targeted serum or treatment product, moisturiser and daily sun protection. Additional products should address a genuine need.
Can using too many skincare products cause problems?
Combining multiple active ingredients or frequently changing products can make it difficult to recognise what is helping your skin and what may be causing sensitivity, dryness or congestion.
What is a personalised facial?
A personalised facial is selected after a consultation and assessment of your skin. Instead of following one fixed protocol, different techniques and products are combined according to your skin’s current condition and goals.
